Nadal and Dementieva Capture Gold Medals at Beijing Olympics Tennis
By David Marcus, reporter for Beijing China Olympic Tennis News
Beijing, China ---August 17…Rafael Nadal of Spain is the Olympic champion! He wins 6-3 7-6(2) 6-3 over Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, and he's been by far the best player of the week in the Beijing China Olympics Tennis tournament. It took him four match points, and he finished it on an in-to-out forehand that Gonzalez could only net, Nadal fell flat on his back in celebration He is a very worthy Olympic champion and now No.1 in the world.

Elena Dementieva made an impressive comeback against her compatriot Dinara Safina to win women's singles gold at the Olympic Tennis Event in Beijing, China. Moving her opponent from side to side and hitting winners to the open court, the No. 5 seed Dementieva fought back from a set down to defeat No. 6 Safina 3-6 7-5 6-3.
Elena fell to her knees after nailing the match ending forehand down the line and screamed in delight.
This was the second career Olympic medal for Dementieva, who won silver eight years ago in Sydney, when she lost to Venus Williams in the singles final. She defeated Venus's sister Serena in the quarterfinals of this year's event. Dementieva 26, has never won a Grand slam title, so this victory is particularly sweet for her. Elena Dementieva, Olympic Gold. It's got a certain ring to it.

Vera Zvonareva of Russia has defeated Li Na 6-0, 7-5 to win the bronze medal. Characteristically the match ended on a Li error, her backhand going way beyond Zvonareva's baseline to ensure the Women's singles medal podium will be an all-Russian affair.
In fact, the Russian women all looked great lined up in their team tracksuits. Shamil Tarpischev, the Fed Cup captain, presented the medals to Elena, Dinara and Vera. Russia - gold, silver, and bronze. The rousing Russian National Anthem blasts out of the stadium. Russian women's tennis is back on the map.
Special times and a gold medal in the doubles for sisters Serena and Venus Williams of the US. The Americans played with smiles on their faces and had a whale of a good match winning 6-2, 6-0. The sisters are in a different league to the Spanish pair of Garrigues/Pascual who tried to arc balls high over the sisters' heads. But these Spanish moonballs were easy targets for these Olympic legends. At match point they both threw their rackets as high as they could and embraced like only sisters can. What a moment they can share for the rest of their lives and with their whole family.
China has won one tennis medal! Yan Zi and Zheng Jie have beaten the Bondarenko sisters 6-2 6-2 to give the home nation one appearance on the medal podium. They had hoped for more, especially after they won gold in Athens four years ago, but it hasn't been a bad tennis event for the Chinese players or for the Chinese people. They had great attendance from the local Chinese population during the event, upcoming Li Na defeated the current Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams, and they have a fantastic facility here in Beijing in which to develop new talent.
'Ni Hao' and goodbye from the Olympic Tennis Centre for the last time! It's been a privilege and an honor to report the news from the 2008 Beijing Olympics Tennis Competition.
